Day 39 – Psalm 74

“O God, how long will the adversary reproach?” Psalm 74:10a

THE ONLY RECOURSE LEFT

The only recourse left seems to be prayer. And prayer was something that the psalmist and others who still believed in God continued to practise.

“O God, how long will the adversary reproach?
Will the enemy blaspheme Your name forever?”
Psalm 74:10

1. “O God”

a) A terse address.
b) It represented the state of agony felt by the psalmist.

2. “How long will the enemy reproach?”

a) The enemy taunted the nation.
b) Great insults must have been hurled at Judah.
c) These insults/reproaches deeply hurt the pride of the nation.
d) When would these insults cease?
e) They were so hard to bear!

3. “Will the enemy blaspheme Your name forever?”

a) What was worse than reproaches was when blasphemy against God took place!
b) What would constitute blasphemy?
i) God could be insulted as One who could not defend His people.
ii) He could be insulted as One who was too weak to help His people.
iii) He could be unfavourably compared to the gods of the Babylonians.
iv) He could have been scorned by the Babylonians.
c) There was deep concern about the good and holy name of God.

i) Surely blasphemy could not be tolerated for too long.

ii) When would God put an end to these blasphemous insults?
