“They scoff and speak wickedly concerning oppression…” Psalm 73:8a

IT SEEMS TO GET WORSE

The more Asaph dwelt on the wicked-rich, the more he seems to discover about them. Each new thought added distress and sorrow to his heart.

“They scoff and speak wickedly concerning oppression;
They speak loftily.”
Psalm 73:8

1. Oppression

a) This was a very real problem in the days of Asaph.
b) This problem has not abated over the passing of centuries!

2. Reactions to the problem of oppression

a) The righteous will cry out to God in great distress for the afflicted.
b) The wicked could not care less.

3. What about the wicked-rich in this context?

a) They scoff at the idea that oppression is a problem.
b) They speak wickedly concerning oppression.
i) They speak against the righteous!
ii) They see no reason why people should speak against oppression.
c) They speak loftily.
i) They speak with an air of condescension.
ii) They look down on the weak who suffer oppression.

4. Where do the wicked-rich fit in where oppression is under discussion?

a) They are untouched by oppression hence their lack of concern.
b) They may even be involved in acts of oppression.
c) They will not take up a cause against the problem of oppression.
