You Are My Witnesses

A great challenge for the year

This year began on a strong note as Pastor Charles challenged us in his Sunday messages to be so much conscious of being witnesses for the Lord.

This is indeed a timely word as we look ahead to Bethany IV. As a church, we hope to continue to reach out as we see more people coming into our midst. Let us be inspired by the Lord’s Word to share with others our testimony…that they may know and discover Him.

These are some of my thoughts as I reflected on this theme.

Lessons on witnessing

1. Witnessing servants

The call was given to Israel to be the Lord’s servant, “You are My witnesses,” says the Lord, “And My servant whom I have chosen,” (Isa 43:10) They were specially chosen by the Lord…to serve Him as His witnesses. The Lord addressed Israel as His servant which is in the singular form. He was referring to the conceptual whole of Israel as His servant. The whole nation was meant to be His servant.

When the Lord addressed Israel as His witnesses, it is in the plural form. He was really looking at the distributive idea of the word. He was looking at each individual. Whether it was the king, the priest, the soldier, the old or the young, each person was meant to be a witness. Each one had the privilege of knowing, believing and understanding the Lord that they may become His witnessing servant.

Often times, we wonder how we may be able to serve the Lord in the church. Being a witness for the Lord is an important area of service to the Lord. Let us be challenged to heed the Lord’s calling for us to be His witnessing servants.

2. Do not fear

“Do not fear, nor be afraid; Have I not told you from that time, and declared it? You are My witnesses. Is there a God besides Me?” (Isa 44:8)

Pastor gave the challenge that we should not fear as we seek to become witnesses of the Lord. He spoke of how the Rabshakeh of Assyria taunted Israel by casting doubts on God and on Hezekiah. (Isa 37) There was such disdain and irreverence against God and His people.

But the Lord’s word to the people was not to be afraid. Hezekiah bore witness of the Lord and prayed for God’s deliverance. It was amazing to see how an angel of the Lord was sent to destroy the soldiers of Assyria. What a wonderful witness of the Lord’s power at work!

We should never be afraid of being the Lord’s witness even though there will be those will taunt us for our faith. The Lord challenged Israel not to be afraid but to declare who God is…that there are no other gods beside Him. Let us not allow fear to prevent us from seizing each opportunity to be His witness.

Let us seek to have the courage and the power to be His witness. Let us heed the Lord’s call to be His witnessing servants this year.
