The Suffering of Christ

Each year as we remember the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, we do not want to approach it intellectually and factually. What our wonderful Saviour had to go through has to be deeply and personally appreciated. His acts of love must touch our hearts differently each time as we remember the road of pain and agony that He undertook in order to give us His salvation and redemption.

The prophecies of Isaiah give us tremendous insights into what the Lord Jesus had to go through when He gave His body and blood for our sakes. Personally, this prophetic phrase particularly struck me, “But He was wounded for our transgressions.” (Isaiah 53:5) Here are some thoughts that were drawn from meditating on this phrase.

Wounded for Our Transgressions

The sins of man demand a price to be paid,

On our own, we could never escape such a fate.

God’s only begotten Son He graciously gave,

Christ came on this earth to purposefully save.

He was our Lord and King, deemed the greatest,

Yet ridiculed, mocked and despised to be the lowest.

He was judged and sentenced in a manner most unjust,

But it led Him to sufferings that would make us wholly just.

Placed on Him was God’s anger and wrath,

No one else could walk this prophesied path.

Christ suffered and shed His blood in great pain,

He sacrificed His body and soul completely for our gain.

He was severely wounded for our transgressions,

The chastisement of our peace brought us salvation.

He carried our affliction and sorrow vicariously,

Satan, sin and death, He overcame victoriously.

This is nothing less than God’s amazing grace.

Given to all, no matter what age, colour or race.

The gift of His great love, we are undeserving exceedingly,

With joy, we offer words of thanksgiving exuberantly.

These precious thoughts moved me to tears…

Tears of grief for my sins sent Christ to His death,

Tears of joy for I have been redeemed by His death.

May each remembrance of the Lord Jesus move us to reappreciate Him in a deep and personal way.
