Work While It Is Day

Conscious of the work of God

The Lord Jesus was always mindful of the work that God had entrusted Him to fulfil. When the Lord and His disciples came across a blind man, they raised a question to Him, based on a common misconception, whether the man sinned or his parents sinned that caused his blindness. The Lord answered that neither one was the cause. However, the Lord was conscious that this man’s blindness was for the works of God to be revealed, “but that the works of God should be revealed in him.” (John 9:3) This work would redound to the glory of God. The work of God was yet to be done in his life. The Lord was just very conscious of the work of God.

Conscious of the commitment to the work of God

“I must work the works of Him who sent Me” (John 9:4)

The Lord used the Greek word “dei”. It means “to be necessary”. Jesus felt a great sense of compulsion…that it was a “must” for Him to work the works of God. This was the kind of commitment that He harboured in His heart for God’s work. He was sent by His Father to do this work. He needed to ensure that the work of God was done. This followed the earlier words of commitment that He made that He must finish the work that He had been given to do. (John 4:34) There was such consistency in the way the Lord approached the work of God. There was no letting up. Let us be conscious of our commitment to the Lord’s work.

Conscious of the limitation of time

The Lord Jesus used the imagery of the day and night to highlight the limitation of time that He had for His ministry, “I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work.” (John 9:4) In the day, while there is still light, work can be done. The Lord recognised that it was still “day time” for Him. Every opportunity that He had to teach or to reach out to people, He seized it. There was a great sense of urgency in His approach to doing the work of God each day.

The night would come all too soon. When night falls, the Lord’s work for God would also come to an end. His ministry would slowly be hindered as opposition against Him began to grow significantly. The Lord Jesus also realised that His impending death would come all too soon. His work would completely cease then.

The reality of death is something that we are constantly reminded of, whether at a funeral or hearing about the death of someone’s friend at a young age. Are we conscious of how short life is? While it is day, let us choose to do the work of God before night comes when our opportunity to serve the Lord is no more.

Conscious of our task for God

“As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” (John 9:5)

The Lord was the light of the world. He came to bring light into this world of darkness through the words that He taught and through His life. He brought light to many…to each one that He met, such as this blind man in whom He demonstrated the work of God. Jesus came to bring light and to correct all false teachings and traditions. As long as He was in the world, He was that light. Let us be conscious of these three words “as long as”. As long as there is still time, let us be challenged to do the work of God urgently. Let us be challenged to fulfil the task that we have been entrusted with.
