“We Have Found The Messiah”

A most significant discovery

When we have found something that is truly significant or life-changing, the most natural thing is to share it with those around us.

Andrew and Philip both had a significant moment in their life when they found the Lord Jesus. The word “found” in Greek is “heurisko” where we get the English word “eureka”. Both Andrew and Philip found the Lord Jesus in their own special way.

Andrew was one of two of John’s disciples who saw that Jesus was the Lamb of God. (John 1:36) He began to follow the Lord Jesus and to learn from Him as Rabbi. He and his fellow disciple remained with Him and he found the Lord Jesus to be the Messiah.

When Jesus met Philip the next day and asked him to follow Him, he responded immediately. He too had found the Lord Jesus.

Being witnesses of the Messiah

Though the knowledge of Andrew and Philip was only initial and limited, they immediately began to share this most significant discovery with others. They became witnesses of Jesus as the Messiah.

1. The witness of Andrew

Andrew went in search of his own brother, Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah.” (John 1:41) The word “have found” is written in the Greek perfect tense. Having found the Messiah, the present effect of it was that Andrew was sharing his discovery with Simon. When we have truly found the Lord Jesus, the impact of it will cause us to bear witness of the Messiah.

2. The witness of Philip

Philip went to Nathaniel and shared with him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets, wrote – Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” (John 1:45) Philip was able to identify the Lord Jesus as the One whom the Scriptures had foretold. What an amazing discovery! He could not but tell his friend Nathaniel. Let us be challenged to bear witness that we have found the Messiah.

“Come and see”

Both Andrew and Philip went beyond just being witnesses…they also sought to bring others to the Lord Jesus. Andrew led his brother Simon to the Lord. Philip said to Nathaniel, “Come and see.” (John 1:46) As a result, both Simon and Nathaniel caught a greater glimpse of the Messiah.

Our challenge is to also encourage our brethren to come and see the Lord Jesus for themselves.

Let us seek to invite our loved one and friends to our Lunar New Year celebration that they may come and see the Lord Jesus.
