The example of Abraham

One of the significant figures of faith in the Old Testament is Abraham. He is known for his special relationship with God. The Apostle James used him as an example of genuine faith to his Jewish brethren. Abraham was called the friend of God (James 2:23). This reflected a sense of closeness in his relationship with God. How did Abraham develop this deep relationship? It was the Lord who encouraged him to walk with Him. What does it mean to walk with the Lord?

God’s encouragement to walk with Him

1. The company of God

“When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am Almighty God; walk before Me and be blameless.” (Genesis 17:1)

  1. God appeared to Abraham and asked him to walk with Him.
  2. It was indeed a special privilege given to Abraham.
  3. He is the Lord, the Almighty God, and He gave him the opportunity to walk with Him.
  4. There is indeed no better companion to have in this world.
  5. The divine company of God is unlike any human company we can find.
  6. Let us appreciate the privilege of having God as our companion.

2. The encouragement to walk with God

“Walk before Me…” (Genesis 17:1)

  1. God lovingly encouraged Abraham to walk with Him.
  2. Abraham needed not feel alone in his journey of life.
  3. God’s presence was there with him.
  4. He was watching over Abraham as he walked.
  5. Let us be encouraged to be conscious that we are walking with God.

3. The challenge to be upright

“And be blameless.” (Genesis 17:1)

  1. Abraham was not meant to be sinless.
  2. He made mistakes along his journey.
  3. For instance, he went to Egypt for help when God told him to stay in Canaan (Genesis 12).
  4. As he was walking with God, Abraham should be consulted with God.
  5. He had to learn from his mistakes and grow wiser in his walk.
  6. With greater consistency, he would become that much blameless and upright.

4. The covenant with the Lord

“And I will make My covenant between Me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly.” (Genesis 17:2)

  1. This covenant was already given to Abraham in Genesis 12.
  2. This was reiterated to Abraham…to confirm it.
  3. The promises/blessings given would be most significant if Abraham walked with the Lord.
  4. Abraham responded to the Lord’s encouragement and walked with Him.

Let us be challenged to walk with the Lord more closely, conscious that He is our best companion, and to be consistent in our walk…blameless before Him.
