Waiting On The Lord

Thank God for a glorious camp

We give heartfelt thanks to our Lord for another blessed Family Camp. The theme for this camp was “Wells of salvation”. This was indeed such a fascinating theme…as we learnt about drawing from the wells of salvation. (Isa 12:3) We learnt about God being that deep source of salvation. (Isa 12:2) As we learn to humbly seek Him, we can draw life-giving water for ourselves and for others.

Waiting upon the Lord

One amazing concept that Pastor Charles taught in greater depth was about waiting upon the Lord. Waiting on the Lord was not just about passively waiting for something to happen. It is much more than that. Isaiah wrote, “And it will be said in that day: “Behold, this is our God; we have waited for Him, and He will save us. This is the Lord; we have waited for Him; we will be glad and rejoice in His salvation.” (Isa 25:9) Isaiah had to learn how to wait. His focus was on God, “Behold, this is our God.” Isaiah, together with the people, should seek to wait on the Lord. What is the purpose in waiting? It is to be instructed by the Lord. It is to be inspired by Him. It is to be imbued with His strength. There are many aspects to the concept of waiting. Let me highlight a few thoughts that truly struck me.

1. Waiting in the way of the just

“The way of the just is uprightness; O Most Upright, You weigh the path of the just. Yes, in the way of Your judgments, O Lord, we have waited for You;” (Isa 26:7,8)

It is the Lord who will determine whether we are walking in His ways or whether we think we are walking in His ways. God will weigh our path whether it is the way of His judgment. It is with this understanding of the way of the just that we should learn to wait on the Lord.

2. Waiting in the morning and evening

Isaiah wrote further, “The desire of our soul is for Your name and for the remembrance of You. With my soul I have desired You in the night, Yes, by my spirit within me I will seek You early; for when Your judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.” (Isa 26:8,9) Waiting on the Lord has to do with our personal relationship with Him. We should learn to wait for the Lord to graciously reveal things to us rather than to turn to our thoughts and ideas. The constant desire of our soul should be for the Lord’s name. There are two ways to wait for the Lord during the day…

a. Morning…We are to seek the Lord in the morning. Our first thought in the early morning is to seek the Lord. The spirit within us should cause us to seek Him diligently.

b. Evening…In the evening, there is also the desire for the Lord’s name. He is the last thought at night. This is what true waiting is. If it is not true, the Lord will know. If our desire is genuinely to know Him, He will graciously reveal Himself to us. Let us learn to practise waiting for the Lord in the morning and in the evening.

The result of waiting on the Lord

As we wait on the Lord, this is what the Lord can do in us, “A man will be as a hiding place from the wind, and a cover from the tempest, as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.” (Isa 32:2) We can become a hiding place for others…to protect them from the wind. We can become the cover from the tempest. Let us become rivers of water in a dry land…a shadow of a rock in a weary land. Let us be challenged to deepen our understanding of what it means to wait on the God of our salvation.
