The fruit of peace

In these difficult times, the need to develop the fruit of peace could not be more vital. We are faced with daily concerns, especially as we see the exponential rise in the COVID-19 cases.

We are also worried over personal challenges depending on our stage in life. We worry about remaining single. When we do get married, we are faced with relationship difficulties. When we have children, there is a different set of worries to be concerned about. Our challenge is indeed to discover the fruit of peace in our lives. Yet, there is a profundity about the peace that God gives, which we cannot fully understand. It was something that stood out to me as Pastor Charles taught us about the fruit of peace at last Sunday’s Morning Worship. The words of the Lord Jesus and the Apostle Paul reveal to us how profound peace is.

The profundity of peace

1. The promise of peace

The Lord Jesus taught His disciples that He would leave His peace with them (John 14:27). But such a promise would have been too profound for them to understand. Jesus made it clearer, stating that He would give them His peace (John 14:27). It is a peace that is unlike what the world gives. The promise of peace which the Lord Jesus would give to our hearts can help us overcome all that may be troubling us.

Jesus added further, “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace.” (John 16:33) The phrase “en emoi” means “in me”. It indicates the location where we can find peace…which is in the Person of the Lord Jesus. The words that the Lord Jesus taught would lead us to Himself. They tell us who the Lord Jesus is. When we abide in Him…“en emoi”, we will find His peace. How it all works out is truly profound. Let us find this peace in the Lord Jesus through His words.

2. The challenge to pray

The Apostle Paul taught the Philippian church not to be anxious but to commit all their worries and concerns to the Lord in prayer (Phil 4:6). When we pray, the peace of God, which goes beyond all our understanding, will guard (like a soldier) our hearts and minds through the Lord Jesus (Phil 4:7). We cannot understand how this peace comes. God gives His peace most profoundly. Our hearts and minds are protected from all forms of negative and discouraging thoughts through the Lord Jesus.

The challenge is to go on to the next level where we meditate on all the right things that are noble, just, pure and more (Phil 4:8). When we practise our faith based on what Paul had taught and exemplified, the God of peace will be with us (Phil 4:9). It is an amazing and profound blessing for the God of peace to be with us through the challenges of life.

Through my mom’s passing, I had a taste of the peace of God. Facing the reality of mom’s death and conducting her funeral was one of the hardest things that I had to go through in my life. But I thank God for the peace that He gave in the time of grief as I looked to the Lord Jesus and His words. Committing my mom in prayer to God and His will brought peace and assurance through those difficult moments. Let us be challenged to abide in the Lord Jesus and His Word, and find peace to face the difficulties of life.
