Discovering the mysteries of the kingdom

The learning of the Lord’s Word may be challenging at times. It is not easy to uncover the profound truths of the Scriptures, and we struggle to understand the mysteries of the kingdom. A problem that we may have is that we are too caught up in the things of the world and we do not give ample time to seek the things of God. There is much for us to discover in the kingdom of God. Let us consider how we may pursue the knowledge of His mysteries.

Knowing the mysteries

1. Belonging to the kingdom

a. It starts with answering the Lord’s call and gaining entrance into the kingdom of God.
b. And we recognise how rich in faith we can be even though we may be materially poor in following Christ.

2. The possibility of knowing

a. One aspect of being rich in faith is understanding the mysteries of the kingdom of God.
b. The Lord Jesus taught His disciples a vital possibility as He explained His use of parables: “Because it has been given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 13:11)
c. The Lord Jesus used the Greek perfect tense in the phrase “it has been given” (dedotai).
d. An aspect of the perfect tense has to do with completing a past action.
e. God has given knowledge of His mysteries in the past…such as in prophecy.

3. The promise of knowledge

a. What God has given already…the promise of knowledge
b. What the Lord Jesus came to do
i. To give faith to enter into God’s kingdom
ii. To open up the Scriptures…the knowledge of the mysteries
c. Our part is to learn well the knowledge that has been given.

4. Personal element

a. The perfect tense usually has a continuing effect.
b. But the follow-through is not automatic.
c. There is a need for a follow-through in order for the mysteries to be revealed.
d. A personal element on the disciples’ part must be fulfilled.
e. He must be a good hearer of the Word of God (Matthew 13:9).
f. His heart must be good ground…a noble and understanding heart (Matthew 13:23; Luke 8:15).
i. The Word of God would then take root and grow.
ii. He would be able to bear much fruit.

5. A proper response

a. Being part of the kingdom of God, we already have some knowledge.
b. If we were to follow-through, the Lord would reveal more mysteries to us (Matthew 13:12).
c. In time, we may even have an abundance of knowledge and understanding.
d. But if we choose not to follow-through, the danger is that even what little we have will be taken away (Matthew 13:12).

Let us be challenged to respond well to the hearing of the Lord’s Word that we may truly discover the great mysteries of the kingdom of God.
