The study of the Lord’s Word

In our study of the Word of God, it is wise to ask ourselves, “What are our goals?” Without proper goals, our study of Scripture may lack direction. It is not about gaining more knowledge and theoretical understanding. The challenge is to go beyond just basic knowledge and to dive deeper into understanding God and His word. One of the key goals of studying the Lord’s Word is to seek God Himself. What does it mean to seek the Lord?

The challenge to seek the Lord

 1. “Seek My face”

“When You said, “Seek My face,” my heart said to You, “Your face, Lord, I will seek.” (Psalm 27:8)

a. The Psalmist David was going through different challenges in life.
i. He was fearful of his enemies.
ii. He faced troubling times.
b. He pleaded with the Lord for His mercy to be given (Psalm 27:7).
c. The Lord’s call to David was to seek His face instead…“Seek My face” (Psalm 27:8).
d. It was not just about seeking God for answers to prayers.
e. David was exhorted to seek God Himself.
f. The heart of David was drawn to seek His face.

Let us be challenged to have a heart that will seek and know God for all that He is.

2. The Word of God must lead us to seek God

“For the Word of the Lord is right, and all His work is done in truth. He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the goodness of the Lord.” (Psalm 33:4,5)

a. The Psalmist wrote concerning his study of the Word of God.
b. The Lord’s Word and His Person are inextricably linked.
c. Behind the Word of God is the Lord Himself.
d. His Word is described as right.
e. The Word leads us to see God as One who is righteous, just and full of goodness.
f. The danger is to study the Word of God and not see Him.

Let us be challenged to ensure that our study of the Lord’s Word should lead us to the Person of God.

3. Seeking God with the whole heart

“Blessed are those who keep His testimonies, who seek Him with the whole heart!” (Psalm 119:2)

“With my whole heart I have sought You;” (Psalm 119:10)

a. The Psalmist recognised that a key thing in studying the Scriptures is to seek the Lord.
b. He observed those who sought the Lord as they desired to draw near to Him…to know Him more deeply.
c. It was not just to seek Him with the mind but also with the heart.
d. The Psalmist did struggle with seeking God.
e. But he learnt to seek Him with the whole heart.
f. There came a genuine desire and joy in seeking the Lord and all that He is.

Let us be challenged, as we study the Lord’s Word, to seek the Lord’s face with our whole heart.
