Thank God for the book of Hebrews

We commenced our study of Hebrews during the early part of this year. The goal that we had was to work towards spiritual maturity. It has been a fascinating book for us to study especially as we took time to look at the Lord Jesus Christ and His role as our Great High Priest.

Even as we end our study of Hebrews for this year, we really do not want to just simply set aside what we have learned. If we do that, we will lose all that we have gained over the year very quickly.

The following are some practical ways in which we can keep appreciating the book of Hebrews.

  1. Re-read the book of Hebrews

It is good for us to take time to re-read the book of Hebrews. After going through the first 10 chapters, re-reading the book can help us to solidify our knowledge and appreciation of the book.

Throughout the course of studying Hebrews, I have re-read it many times…in preparation for each week’s lesson. There are always greater insights to be gleaned concerning the Lord Jesus Christ.

  1. Remember the lessons learned

As we read, we want to remember the lessons learned and there are many. Whether it was about the Lord Jesus seeing us as His brethren or coming to the throne of grace or appreciating what the blood of Christ has done for us, we want to give time to recalling these lessons. Let us not forget all these precious truths concerning the Lord Jesus Christ.

  1. Reflect over the lessons that have impacted us

We also want to give time to reflect. Out of all the lessons learned, which are the ones that have impacted us the most? It is through reflecting that we can go deeper in our appreciation of the lessons gained and be touched by them.

  1. Respond to the challenges given to us

Ultimately, we want to see ourselves responding. We should seek to respond to the challenges that have been given such as, “let us draw near…let us hold fast…let us consider one another.” (Isa 10:22-24) Let us seek to respond to these challenges.

  1. Relating to life and ministry

It is only through responding that we can relate the truths of the book of Hebrews to our life and ministry. We were taught to live by faith. (Heb 10:38) We were also taught to fulfil our purpose as the Lord Jesus did in doing the will of God. (Heb 10:7) The word of God is meant to be related to our life and ministry.

Let us be challenged to make the words of Hebrews come alive to us. They were meant to work in our lives powerfully like a two edged sword. Let us respond to the word and to see ourselves growing towards greater spiritual growth and maturity.
