The challenge to have oneness in prayer

As we enter into an exciting year ahead, my heart is deeply challenged to pray. I recognize that we need to cultivate the spirit of prayer as individuals and as a YAG…in view of all that we seek to attempt. We want to begin by turning to our Lord to seek His blessings and leading.

After the Lord Jesus ascended to heaven, the apostles and their fellow brethren came together to pray. They were gathered together at the upper room and took time to pray, “These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.” (Acts 1:14) What are some lessons that we should learn from the example of the apostles as we look ahead?

1. Priority given to prayer

The disciples felt a great need to pray. The Lord had just left them and they were about to begin their ministry. They gave priority to prayer.

In the same way, we should give priority to prayer. We want to place prayer first as we look at YAG’s involvement in the Bethany’s 40 + 2 year of ministry. Much will be attempted and we need to first commit these things to the Lord in prayer.

2. Devoted to praying

The word “continue” in Greek means to be devoted, to persist in. The apostles were devoted to making prayers to the Lord. They were earnestly and diligently praying.

Let us also be challenged to be devoted in offering our prayers to the Lord. Understanding the ministry ahead, let’s be diligent in making prayers for the YAG as we work together and for Bethany as we seek to forge as a greater sense of oneness.

3. Oneness in prayer

There was a great sense of unity among the apostles and brethren as they prayed in one accord. They were praying with one mind. They all understood the challenges ahead of them and prayed with a single mindset. They prayed and supplicated to the Lord for His blessings.

Let’s be challenged to pray and supplicate…to intensify our prayer efforts to the Lord for the year ahead. Let’s be challenged to pray with a greater sense of oneness.

Praying for the Spirit of God to empower

What were the apostles really praying for? The Lord Jesus promised, “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” (Acts 1:8) The Lord Jesus had already given the promise of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit will come and empower them for the ministry ahead.

For us today, we want to pray that the Spirit of God will fill us so that we may have a greater sense of oneness as we seek to serve the Lord together as one body. We want to pray for the Spirit of God to lead and guide us. Let us be challenged to cultivate oneness as we pray for the Lord’s blessings for the YAG and the church in growing as one body.
