The challenge of being loyal

Many speak of being loyal to family and friends. However, what about being truly loyal to our Lord? As King David gave instructions concerning the building of the temple, he gave this vital challenge to his own son, Solomon, “As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a loyal heart and with a willing mind; for the Lord searches all hearts and understands all the intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will cast you off forever.” (1 Chron 28:9)

What does it mean for a person to be loyal to the Lord? It is to have a keen heart that desires to know God and to serve Him. It is to seek the Lord consistently and not to forsake Him. Let us be challenged to be loyal to God.

A prayer to be loyal

“And give my son Solomon a loyal heart to keep Your commandments and Your testimonies and Your statutes, to do all these things, and to build the temple for which I have made provision.” (1 Chron 29:19)

King David specially prayed for Solomon as he dedicated the offerings for the building of the temple. He prayed for his son to be given a loyal heart.

A loyal heart seeks to keep the Lord’s commandments and to do all of them. David recognised that this loyal heart could only come from God. Let us pray for the Lord to give us a loyal heart.

A challenge for all to be loyal

“Let your heart therefore be loyal to the Lord our God, to walk in His statutes and keep His commandments, as at this day.” (1 Kings 8:61)

Loyalty was something that Solomon had displayed initially. He was loyal in the way he walked with the Lord. As Solomon sought to dedicate the temple of the Lord, he gave this challenge to the people of Israel. He encouraged them to be loyal to the Lord. They were to walk in the Lord’s Word and to keep them.

Solomon desired to be loyal to the Lord. Solomon did heed the words of his father David. God had answered the prayer of David for Solomon. However, loyalty is not just about starting well.

The danger of not continuing in our loyalty to God

“For it was so, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned his heart after other gods; and his heart was not loyal to the Lord his God, as was the heart of his father David.” (1 Kings 11:4) Solomon was not able to be loyal throughout his life. When he was old, he became completely disloyal to God. Solomon had many wives who worshipped other gods. His wives turned his heart to follow their gods.

He was no longer loyal to God as his father David was. David did not in any way turn to other gods at any time throughout his life. But Solomon was not able to follow the same path. Even if we begin being loyal to the Lord, it does not assure us that we will continue to be loyal.

Let us be challenged to commence being loyal to the Lord. Let us also seek to continue to be faithful throughout our life. Let us ensure that we remain loyal to God until the end.
