Trusting God in difficult circumstances

The challenge is not about trusting the Lord when times are good. It is when times are bad that we must seek to trust the Lord even more. It is with faith that we should deal with the difficult circumstances of life.

The Psalmist David was faced with two problems as he wrote Psalm 11.

  1. The hostility of the wicked… They were seeking to attack those who were upright with the use of violence (Psalm 11:2,5).
  2. Bad advice… David was given a piece of bad advice, and he responded, “How can you say to my soul, “Flee as a bird to your mountain”?” (Psalm 11:1) The negative voice of fear can cause us to want to flee and escape. The challenge is for us to trust in the Lord and not run away from life’s difficulties.

Placing our trust in the Lord

“In the Lord I put my trust;” (Psalm 11:1)

  1. David was able to make a firm and clear declaration of his faith in God.
  2. The Lord Himself was the object of his faith.
  3. There was no one better in whom he may put his trust.
  4. He sought to put his complete trust in the Lord.

Trusting in the Lord

Why should David put His whole trust in the Lord?

1. God’s sovereignty

“The LORD is in His holy temple, the LORD’s throne is in heaven;” (Psalm 11:4)

  1. The Lord is to be found in His holy temple on earth.
  2. He is also to be found sitting on His holy throne in heaven, high above all other thrones.
  3. God is sovereign over all things, both the physical and the spiritual.
  4. He is in absolute control of all things, both in the present and the future.
  5. No matter how dire our circumstances may be, there is nothing out of His sovereign control.

Let us trust in the Lord’s sovereignty over all things.

2. God’s watchful care

“His eyes behold,” (Psalm 11:4)

  1. From His throne, the Lord watches over the earth.
  2. With loving eyes, He sees and cares for us at all times.
  3. God understands what we are going through and the kind of care we need.
  4. He would watch over us faithfully and carefully.

Let us trust in God’s watchful care.

3. God seeks to test us according to His will

“His eyelids test the sons of men. The Lord tests the righteous,” (Psalm 11:4,5)

  1. God tests us through the trials of life, which can be quite painful and distressing.
  2. But it is all according to His plan and will.
  3. He knows exactly what we need in life for us to grow in faith.
  4. David experienced many trials in life, facing enemies such as King Saul.
  5. But he trusted in the Lord’s plan that all he had gone through was according to His will.

Let us be challenged to place our absolute trust in the Lord as we face the difficult circumstances of life.
