Responding to the Word of God

Learning from the Word of God is an essential and significant part of our life and ministry. But how have we been responding to God’s Word? Has His Word been working effectively in our lives? We have been learning to bear fruits of the Spirit each week. Have we become more fruitful such as showing love, joy, peace and more? We recognise that it does take time for us to abound more in these fruits. Yet, it is good to assess the problems that may affect our lives and prevent the Word of the Lord from working effectively. As a servant of the Lord, the Psalmist David wrote a prayer that was frank and open. It was a candid assessment of the sins and struggles in his life. In the same way, it is prudent for us to make an honest assessment of the problems in our lives and deal with them.

Assessment of our lives

What are some problems that we need to assess in our life?

1. The error of our ways (Psalm 19:12)

There is a tendency for us to make errors in our life, in our decisions and actions. Sometimes, we may even find it hard to understand why we keep making the same errors.

2. Secret faults (Psalm 19:12)

Are there secret faults in our life that we may have sought to keep hidden? Assessing our lives require that we search ourselves deeply and acknowledge these innermost faults before the Lord.

3. Presumptuous sins (Psalm 19:13)

Being presumptuous is a very real problem as we tend to think that we are good and right in our own ways rather than following the ways of the Lord and His Word. God revealed how serious this problem was. He taught that if we committed a presumptuous sin, we would have brought a reproach (rebuke) against God and despised His Word (Num 15:30,31).

4. Domination of sins (Psalm 19:13)

If we do not address the sins in our life, whether they are secret faults or presumptuous sins, they can dominate and control our lives. We are unable to live our lives fruitfully.

5. Great transgressions (Psalm 19:13)

If we do not address our sins thoroughly, there is a danger of falling into great transgressions.

Addressing our problems with the Word of God

1. Part of the solution is in prayer

In praying, we recognise our need for God to help us address these sin problems as we are unable to deal with them on our own. Let us pray for the Lord’s cleansing of our sins and to guard us against the danger of these sins (Psalm 19:12).

2. Another part is to turn to the Word of God

The Lord’s Word can cleanse our ways (Psalm 119:9). The Word of God is meant to enlighten us to understand our errors and our secret faults and deal with them thoroughly (Psalm 19:7,8). His Word should cause us to be wiser in our choices and not be presumptuous in our actions. The Word of God has the power to change our soul and our life would no longer be dominated by sin.

Let us be challenged to assess the sins in our life candidly and to look to the Word of God to address them effectively that our lives may be thoroughly cleansed, wonderfully changed and abounding fruitfully.
