The Lord as our example

Life is precious and short. We do not want to waste our life away unwisely. But yet how many of us have sought to live our life purposefully? It is wise for us to consider living a life that is full of purpose.

The best example that we have is the Lord Jesus who lived His life with a great sense of purpose, “But He said to them, “I must preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, because for this purpose I have been sent.” (Luke 4:43) This was His declaration concerning His purpose on this earth.

Not only do we see the purpose of the Lord’s life and ministry, it also revealed how this purpose impacted His life and the choices He made.

A life of purpose

What are some lessons that we can learn about living a life of purpose?

  1. A purpose that is divine

The Lord Jesus lived His life with a divine purpose in mind. This purpose was given to Him by His Father. It was not a subjective purpose that He derived for Himself. The source of His purpose was from God.

Jesus had been sent by His Father to live a purposeful life. He had been sent as the messenger of the Lord to fulfil His divine purpose.

Let us be challenged to discover the Lord’s divine purpose for our lives.

  1. A purpose that is clear

The purpose that God gives is also meant to be something that is clear. Jesus was very clear about His purpose which was to preach the Kingdom of God. The Lord’s ministry in Capernaum involved the work of healing and the people came that morning to seek more healing. They even tried to keep Him from going away.

Jesus told His disciples that it was time for them to go to the next city. His primary purpose was to preach the kingdom of God and not just to do the work of healing. He was very clear about His purpose and He was not going to be distracted by what other people thought or wanted Him to do. Let us be challenged to have clarity of purpose and not be distracted in our focus.

  1. A purpose that is a driving force

The Lord’s purpose became a driving force in His life and ministry. His purpose became the basis of His reasoning…in the choices He made.

He said “I must preach”. The word “must” in Greek is the word “dei” which means “It is necessary”. There is a sense of necessity…of compulsion in how Jesus sought to carry out His purpose. Let us be challenged to make our purpose of life be a driving force in our life and ministry. Let us be challenged to live a life that is truly purpose-filled.
