Reviewing our time

As we enter the month of October, we recognise that three-quarters of the year have passed. Very quickly, we find ourselves in the last quarter of 2025. How has our year been so far? Let us take the time to review our lives and ministries, especially in how wisely we have used our time.

In the prayer of Moses, he reflected on various life lessons. One particular concern was the brevity of life. He recognised how frail our lives are. One word from God, such as “Return, O children of men”, and our lives would come to an end (Psalm 90:3). Life is fleeting. Even if we were to live a thousand years, it will pass us by like yesterday. Like a watch in the night that is only three hours, like a flood that carries things away, like sleep and like grass that flourishes in the morning and withers in the evening…time will quickly pass by (Psalm 90:4–6). The challenge is for us to use the remaining time of 2025 more wisely.

The prayer of Moses

1. Time given to focus on God

“Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever You had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.” (Psalm 90:1,2)

  1. The first thoughts in Moses’ prayer were about God.
  2. He saw God as his dwelling place.
  3. He focused on the everlasting nature of God.
  4. Moses took time to discover the Person of God who existed before the mountains and the earth were created.
  5. Let us also take time to focus our thoughts on the Person of God.

2. Time to confess our sins

  1. While we may be busy with work and ministry, we may not be right before God.
  2. God examines our hearts and sees all the secret sins and iniquities in us.
  3. The challenge is for us to confess our iniquities and secret sins before the Lord in the light of His countenance (Psalm 90:8).
  4. As Moses was conscious of God’s wrath, we should also be mindful of it (Psalm 90:7).
  5. While we have the time, let us seek the Lord for His cleansing.
  6. Let us look to the Lord for His compassion and mercy early and not wait (Psalm 90:13,14).

3. Time to number our days

  1. Moses recognised that while we may live 70, 80 years or more, it is still short (Psalm 90:10).
  2. He prayed to God, “So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (Psalm 90:12).
  3. It is wise for us to count our days and use them carefully with a heart of wisdom.
  4. Let us be challenged to make each day count for the Lord in our lives and ministries.

4. Time to pray that God may establish the work of our hands

At the end of our brief life, what is it that we want to have accomplished? Moses prayed for the Lord to establish the work of his hand (Psalm 90:17). God revealed His work to Moses, and for 40 years, He established it. Moses did his part to complete it. Let us be challenged to use our time wisely to discover the work that God has meant for us to fulfil. Let us humbly seek the Lord to establish the work of our hands for this year and beyond.
