With Most of Them God Was Not Well-Pleased

Text: 1 Corinthians 10, Exodus 32

REALISING THE INSIDIOUS PROBLEM OF SIN

1. Some complained and contended

“Nor complain, as some of them also complained…”   1 Corinthians 10:9
a. Complained about bitter water   (Exodus 15:24)
b. Complained about not having food   (Exodus 16:2, 8)

2. Others committed Sexual immorality

“Nor let us commit sexual immorality as some of them did and in one day twenty three thousand fell.”   1 Corinthians 10:8

3. Some even tested the Lord

“Nor tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted and were destroyed by serpents…”   1 Corinthians 10:9
a. The people of Israel tested the Lord in the wilderness
b. They made light of sin and put God to the test
c. The Lord sent fiery serpents and many died.

THE REACTION OF GOD TO THE INSIDIOUS PROBLEM OF SIN

“But with most of them God was not well pleased, for their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.”   1 Corinthians 10:5

1. Not well pleased – ouk eudokeó

2. God’s wrath was on them

3. God’s gradual punitive judgment

a. He would rebuke
b. He would explain
c. He would correct and punish

APPROPRIATE CHALLENGE – BE WELL PLEASING TO GOD

1. Do not test the Lord

“Nor tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted and were destroyed by serpents…”   1 Corinthians 10:9

2. Following the example of the Lord Jesus

“Suddenly a voice came from heaven saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” Matthew 3:17
a. eudokeó – Well pleased
i. In Whom He was well pleased
ii. In the person of the Lord Jesus
b. Sonship
i. The Lord Jesus practiced sonship
ii. He is a beloved Son
c. Obedience when tested
i. Obeying the word   (Matthew 4:4)
ii. Choosing not to test God   (Matthew 4:7)
iii. Worshipping Him and Him alone   (Matthew 4:10)
