THE PERSON OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
The Person and ministry of the Holy Spirit is best understood when we look at the Scriptures as a whole.
- Prophecies
a) The prophet Joel prophesied about the outpouring of the Spirit Joel 2
b) The prophet Isaiah also prophesied about this outpouring Isaiah 44:3
- Promise
a) The Lord Jesus promised that He would ask His Father to give the Holy Spirit John 14:16-17
b) This promise was elaborated on further John 15:26; 16:7-11
THE ADVENT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
His Coming was spectacular. This was carefully described by Luke, the author of the Book of Acts.
1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Acts 2:1-4
- The emblems of the Spirit of God
a) A mighty wind
b) Tongues of fire
- The Impact on the 120 Disciples
a) They were filled with the Holy Spirit
b) They were given a very special gift for ministry
c) They were given the ability to speak in other languages they had not learned
d) This gift would enable them to share the message of the Gospel with those who were interested
OUR CHALLENGE
The Holy Spirit is indispensable for life and ministry. The Promise of the Holy Spirit has already been given! If a Church is to be alive and thriving, the filling of the Spirit must be diligently and humbly sought.
