"He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief..."
Text: Romans 4:20
ANOTHER GLIMPSE OF ABRAHAM’S FAITH
We have yet another glimpse of the faith of Abraham in the following text.
“He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief,
but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God.”
Romans 4:20
1. He did not waver at the promise of God
This is a tremendous insight as to the kind of faith that Abraham possessed. We are surely reminded of what James wrote in his epistle.
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God,
who gives to all liberally and without reproach,
and it will be given to him.
But let him ask in faith, with no doubting,
for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea
driven and tossed by the wind.
For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything
from the Lord; he is a double-minded man,
unstable in all his ways.”
James 1:5-8
If we apply James’ rule of what true faith is, we will be able to derive the following picture:-
a) What Abraham was not
i) He was not a double-minded man.
ii) He was not unstable in all his ways.
b) What Abraham was
i) He had that resolute faith in God.
ii) He was able to banish doubts from his heart and mind.
2. Strengthened in faith, giving glory to God
The faith that Abraham had stood him in tremendous stead!
a) He was made strong (in spirit and in his body).
b) He was able to give glory to God.
This was Paul’s personal understanding of how Abraham’s faith helped him to give glory to God for His promises.
