"Repay no one evil for evil."

Text: Romans 12:17

REMINISCENT OF THE TEACHINGS OF JESUS

There is no mistaking that in this section of Paul’s writings, his words are reminiscent of the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ.

“Repay no one evil for evil.
Have regard for good things in the sight of all men.”
Romans 12:17

1. The presence of evil

This was something that was undeniable! Evil has always been present and prevalent. How were believers to respond when evil deeds were perpetrated against them?

2. Different responses

a) There were some who believed in retaliation.

These repaid evil with evil!

b) There were those who withdrew from society.

These avoided conflicts at all cost!

3. Repay no one evil for evil

a) This was a reiteration of what Jesus taught (Matthew 5:38-48).
b) Evil must never be utilized to combat evil.

4. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men

The practical ramifications may be found in what Jesus taught!

a) There must be a turning of the other cheek.
b) There must be no evil resistance.
c) There must be no hatred in the heart.
d) There must be the doing of “good things” to even the wicked.

THE BOTTOM LINE

The words of the Lord Jesus must be carefully considered. The Lord calls on all believers to heed His words!

“Therefore you shall be perfect,
just as your Father in heaven is perfect.”
Matthew 5:48
