"Be of the same mind toward one another..."

Text: Romans 12:16

UNITY IN THE BODY OF CHRIST

Oneness was something that Jesus prayed for (Cf. John 17:22). It was a valid and vital prayer! There were many things that threatened the oneness of the Church even in the first century. No church was ever free from the threat of schism. Paul appealed for unity time and again (Churches include Corinthians, Philippians and Romans).

GUARDING ONENESS IN THE BODY OF CHRIST

How may we encourage oneness in the Body of Christ? Let us ponder the following text. Four practical words of admonition may be noted:-

“Be of the same mind toward one another.
Do not set your mind on high things,
but associate with the humble.
Do not be wise in your own opinion.”
Romans 12:16

1. “Be of the same mind toward one another”

a) This is something all believers ought to work harder at.
b) It is not impossible to be “of the same mind” (especially if it is the mind of Christ- Philippians 2:5-11).

2. “Do not set your mind on high things”

a) Paul is making reference to people who are haughty.
b) These tended to despise others.
c) This is something that all believers ought to preclude (Cf. 1 Corinthians 1-2).

3. “But associate with the humble”

a) Those who are humble have no lofty pretensions, no hidden agenda.
b) The humble are those who are “poor in spirit”.

4. “Do not be wise in your own opinion”

a) The proud tend to be opinionated.
b) They tend to glory in their own wisdom.
c) The Scriptures teach against glorying in human wisdom (Cf. Jeremiah 9:23-24)
