"Release the four angels"

Text: Revelation 9:14

THE SIXTH ANGEL SOUNDED

The sixth angel blew his trumpet. As he blew his trumpet, he was given instructions from a voice from the golden altar in heaven.

“Then the sixth angel sounded:
And I heard a voice from the four horns
of the golden altar which is before God,
saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet,
‘Release the four angels
who are bound at the great river Euphrates.’
So the four angels,
who had been prepared
for the hour and day and month and year,
were released to kill a third of mankind.
Now the number of the army
of the horsemen was two hundred million;
I heard the number of them.”
Revelation 9:13-16

1. The golden altar.

a) This was a heavenly altar.

b) The altar was made of gold.

c) It had four horns.

i) This was to symbolise the majesty of the heavenly altar.

ii) It was also meant to emphasise its authority and power.

2. Divine instruction given.

a) Four mighty angels had been bound at the great river Euphrates.

b) These were:

i) Mighty angels.

ii) Fallen angels.

iii) They had to be locked away because of their great malice.

iv) In God’s mercy they had been locked up all this while.

c) They were now released from imprisonment.

3. The River Euphrates

a) This was a veiled reference to ancient Babylon.

b) Babylon was one of the most powerful and wicked empires of old.

c) These four fallen angels would cause destruction as Babylon did.

4. Prepared

a) They had been restrained by God.

b) They were now “prepared” to be unleashed on the earth.

c) This preparation was described mysteriously.

“For the hour and day and month and year”

5. Their wicked activities.

a) Their powers would exceed that of the demonic locusts.

b) They would have power to kill mankind.

c) They would destroy a third of mankind.

d) Millions would die because of these four wicked and mighty demons.

6. The size of the demonic army.

a) It numbered 200 million.

b) Were all of these demons?

c) Perhaps not!

d) Human agents could be part of this deadly demonic army.
