“The LORD reigns; let the peoples tremble!” Psalm 99:1a

A STRONG AND RECURRENT THEME

A strong theme that keeps recurring is “The LORD reigns”. The following psalms feature this theme. The following psalms begin with this phrase (Psalms 93, 97, 99).

“The LORD reigns;
Let the peoples tremble!
He dwells between the cherubim;
Let the earth be moved!”
Psalm 99:1

1. Different applications are to be noted

a) “The LORD reigns; He is clothed with majesty.” (Psalm 93:1)
b) “The LORD reigns; let the earth rejoice.” (Psalm 97:1)
c) “The LORD reigns; let the peoples tremble!” (Psalm 99:1)

2. The focus of Psalm 99

a) Trembling before the Lord:-
i) In reverence.
ii) As an appropriate response (though different).
b) Reason attached.
i) God dwells between the cherubim.
ii) These are mighty angelic beings.
iii) These were depicted as angels that guarded the Ark of the Covenant (Exodus 25:22).
iv) The Ark of the Covenant represented the Presence of God with Israel.
v) The Ark was to be regarded as most sacred.
c) Let the earth be moved:-
i) With great awe.
ii) With appropriate reverence.
iii) Those who do not know the Lord must be taught how to regard Him.
