Day 345 – Psalm 89

“If his sons forsake My law…” Psalm 89:30a

GLORIOUS PROMISES OF GOD

God’s promises were many and wonderful. They bring such joy and hope to the heart! Ethan’s heart reflected great joy as he recalled the Davidic covenant God established.

A REALISTIC UNDERSTANDING

However, these promises were given with a realistic understanding as to what human beings were like, even if they were royalty.

“If his sons forsake My law
And do not walk in My judgments.”
Psalm 89:30

1. “If his sons forsake My law”

a) There was anticipation of the sons of David not walking in their father’s footsteps.
b) The history of Israel’s kings are recorded:-
i) 1 and 2 Kings
ii) 1 and 2 Chronicles

2. The waywardness of the royal sons of David

a) They would forsake God’s law.
b) They would not walk in God’s commandments.

3. A short list of sons who forsook the Lord and His laws

Sadly, the immediate three successors to the throne of David did not prove to be loyal in heart to the Lord!

a) Solomon turned away from God in the latter years and worshipped idols (1 Kings 11:1-8).
b) Rehoboam was reckless and arrogant and caused the kingdom of Israel to split into two (1 Kings 12:1-24).
c) Abijam’s heart was not loyal to God (1 Kings 15:3).

4. When “If” became “reality”

a) What the Lord had forewarned came to pass.
b) The sons of David did forsake God and His laws.
