Day 335 – Psalm 89

“I have found My servant David…” Psalm 89:20a

THE PEOPLE’S CHOICE

Samuel was one of the most distinguished prophets of Israel. God revealed Himself to Samuel and all Israel knew that he was given the word of God (1 Samuel 3:19-21). But in time, Samuel grew old and sadly, his sons did not walk in the ways of their father (1 Samuel 8:1-5). They demanded that Samuel gave Israel a king to rule over them. Despite Samuel’s protests, the people had their way, and Saul was made the first king of Israel (1 Samuel 9-10).

GOD’S CHOICE

Before too long, King Saul performed as Samuel had prophesied. He proved to be a selfish king who did little to strengthen the nation. God then informed Samuel that He had found someone to replace King Saul. Samuel went on to anoint David as the next king of Israel. The following text described how God spoke to Nathan.

“I have found My servant David;
With My holy oil I have anointed him.”
Psalm 89:20

1. “I have found My servant David”

a) This was God’s way of informing Samuel about young David.
b) The word “found” may have the following connotations:-
i) It was not easy to “find” a suitable person to be a king.
ii) David was “found” to be worthy of being entrusted with the kingdom of Israel.
iii) One of the most commendable qualities that he possessed was that he had a servant’s heart.

2. “With My holy oil I have anointed him”

a) The actual person who anointed David as the next king of Israel was Samuel (1 Samuel 16:12-13).
b) However in this text God took “ownership”.
i) The holy oil was God’s.
ii) God Himself anointed David (albeit through Samuel).

3. Special revelation to Nathan the prophet

a) This account of David’s anointing complement the account in 1 Samuel 16:12-13.
b) Nathan was given special revelation to understand God’s involvement in David’s life.
