Day 263 – Psalm 85

“I will hear what God the LORD will speak…” Psalm 85:8a

THE MANY ROLES OF THE LEVITES

The Levites played a number of smaller roles (compared to the Aaronic priests). Nevertheless these were not without significance.

1. They carried the holy artifacts of the Temple.

2. They were door-keepers.

3. They were also intercessors.

4. They were speakers.

The last role listed may be found in the following text.

“I will hear what God the LORD will speak,
For He will speak peace
To His people and to His saints;
But let them not turn back to folly.”
Psalm 85:8

SPOKESMEN FOR GOD

The Levites were spokesmen for God. Two things were highlighted:-

1. “I will hear what God the LORD will speak”

a) This is the first task of every speaker.
b) He must devote time to be still before the Lord.
c) He must listen well to what God would say.

d) This was a discipline that every prophet knew well (Jeremiah 1; Ezekiel 2).

2. “For He will speak peace”

a) A message of peace from the Lord.
i) Because intercession had been made.
ii) Because sins had been confessed.
iii) Because God’s anger had been turned away.
b) The recipients of this message of peace.

These would be God’s people! They are affectionately called “His saints”. These would hear precious words of comfort from the lips of the sons of Korah.
