“Who became as refuse on the earth.” Psalm 83:10b

THE FATE OF KING JABIN

The fate of King Jabin of Canaan was noted by both the writer of the Book of Judges and by Asaph.

“Who perished at En Dor,
Who became as refuse on the earth.”
Psalm 83:10

“So on that day God subdued Jabin king of Canaan
in the presence of the children of Israel. And the hand
of the children of Israel grew stronger and stronger
against Jabin king of Canaan, until they had destroyed
Jabin king of Canaan.”
Judges 4:23-24

1. From the Book of Judges

a) It was God who subdued King Jabin.
b) God strengthened the hand of the children of Israel.
i) They were initially very weak.
ii) They were strengthened as they cried out to God in prayer.
iii) They were led to victory by Deborah and Barak.
iv) Their successful battles against the Canaanites emboldened and strengthened them.
v) King Jabin and his mighty army of chariots were finally destroyed (Judges 4:24).

2. From Psalm 83

a) King Jabin perished at the Brook Kishon, in En Dor.
b) His defeat was entire and complete.
i) He and the Canaanite army were soundly defeated.
ii) They had become “as refuse on the earth”.

ASAPH’S PLEA TO GOD

What was the essence of Asaph’s plea to God?

1. That Israel’s enemies would be defeated thoroughly.

2. That God would cause them to suffer the same fate as King Jabin and his Canaanite army.
