Day 221 – Psalm 82

“But you shall die like men…” Psalm 82:7a

TWO SIDES OF THE SAME COIN

Just as there are two sides to a coin, man has two sides as well. Let us read the following text as a whole.

“I said, ‘You are gods,
And all of you are children of the Most High.
But you shall die like men;
And fall like one of the princes.'”
Psalm 82:6-7

1. On the one side of man

a) “You are gods” (Psalm 82:6).
b) Man is truly made in the image of God (Genesis 1:26, 27).

2. On the other side of man

a) Man is but mortal.
b) He is unlike God.
c) Man will die one day.

3. No matter the greatness

a) Man may achieve greatness.
b) He may even become “a prince”.
c) Nevertheless he will fall like one of the princes.
i) Man is fallible.
ii) Man is weak and badly flawed.
iii) Man is sinful and is capable of great wickedness.
iv) Ultimately, man will succumb to death.

THE CHALLENGE TO LIVE HUMBLY BEFORE GOD

Asaph’s challenge was sometimes very direct and pointed. Sometimes he leaves it to his reader to come to the obvious conclusion. Let man come to his senses. Let man comprehend that it is his great privilege to be made in the image of God. What greater nobility is accorded man than when he fulfills the potential of being made in the image of God? He does this best when he upholds justice.
