Psalm 80:14a "Return, we beseech You, O God of hosts..."

Day 192 – Psalm 80

“Return, we beseech You, O God of hosts…” Psalm 80:14a

A PLAINTIVE CRY

Asaph’s survey of the plight of Israel caused him to make this plaintive cry to God.

“Return, we beseech You, O God of hosts;
Look down from heaven and see,
And visit this vine.”
Psalm 80:14

1. “We beseech You, O God of hosts”

a) To beseech is simply “to beg humbly”.
b) This humble plea was made to the “God of hosts”.
i) Only the God of hosts can reverse the situation.
ii) It would take great power to bring about a full restoration.

2. “Return…”

a) It was as if God had turned His back on His people.
b) And if God were to do that He would have every right to do so.
c) Israel had broken the covenant of God disastrously.
d) But would God not hear this plaintive cry and return to His people once again?

3. “Look down from heaven”

a) God said He would dwell between the cherubim (Psalm 80:1c).
b) But it seemed that He was now in heaven than among His people.
c) Nevertheless Asaph would plead with God to look down from heaven and hear his prayer.

4. “And visit this vine”

a) Asaph pleaded with God to visit His people, His flock, and His vine.
b) Then God would note just how badly damaged the vine was.
c) Then perhaps God would be moved with compassion.
d) And perhaps God would return to His vine and heal the damage.
