Day 191 – Psalm 80

“The boar out of the woods uproots it…” Psalm 80:13a

THE REMOVAL OF THE HEDGE

What would happen if the protective hedge was removed? The following text describes the consequences.

“Why have You broken down her hedges,
So that all who pass by the way pluck her fruit?
The boar out of the woods uproots it,
And the wild beast of the field devours it.”
Psalm 80:12-13

1. Three things were observed when the hedge is broken down:-

a) “All who pass by the way pluck her fruit”
i) This would be disastrous for the vine.
ii) The vine could be damaged.
iii) The ground could also be damaged.
iv) The harvest would be affected adversely.
b) “The boar out of the woods uproots it”
i) Wild boars were kept out of the vineyard by the hedge (often a concrete wall).
ii) The wild boars like to rut around the roots.
iii) In the long run the vine is damaged severely.
c) “The wild beast of the field devours it”
i) Other beasts of the field would come into the vineyard.
ii) Extensive damage would occur.

WHY HAVE YOU BROKEN ITS HEDGE?

Asaph knew the answer even as he raised up this question.

1. He was not questioning God’s sovereignty to remove the hedge.

2. He was lamenting the fact that with the removal of the hedge the vine was damaged badly.

3. Would God not somehow restore Israel and shine upon His favour once more?
