Day 164 – Psalm 78

“And He built His sanctuary…” Psalm 78:69a

THE BUILDING OF THE TABERNACLE

It was God who gave clear and specific instructions as to how the Tabernacle was to be built. Moses faithfully obeyed all of God’s instructions and the Tabernacle was then consecrated as God’s sanctuary (Exodus 25-40 It might be noted that a great portion of the Book of Exodus was devoted to the plans God gave to Moses for the construction of the Tabernacle).

THE TABERNACLE AT SHILOH

The Tabernacle at Shiloh lasted 369 years according to the Talmud. However, Biblically, the Tabernacle did not feature much in the history of Israel. With the loss of the Ark of the Covenant to the Philistines, Shiloh lost its prominence as a religious center of Israel.

THE BUILDING OF THE TEMPLE

God had always wanted to have a Sanctuary built so that He could be with His people. That was the principal idea. The sanctuary needed to be carefully built and established.

“And He built His sanctuary like the heights,
Like the earth which He has established forever.
He also chose David His servant,
And took him from the sheepfolds.”
Psalm 78:69-70

1. “He built His sanctuary”

a) His sanctuary must be built well and beautifully.
b) Two analogies were employed significantly:-
i) Like the heights.
ii) Like the earth which He has established forever.

2. “He also chose David His servant, and took him from the sheepfolds”

a) David may have been an unlikely candidate for kingship.
b) But He was God’s choice.
c) The Lord was right in choosing David.

DAVID’S EXTRAORDINARY LOVE FOR GOD AND THE TEMPLE

David cultivated a supreme love for God and His House. He was truly a man after God’s own heart.

1. Psalm 132 describes David’s relentless efforts to find a dwelling place for the Lord.

2. 1 Chronicles 29 describes David’s generosity in providing for the construction of the temple.
