“Chose the tribe of Judah…” Psalm 78:68a

A STUDY OF JACOB’S BLESSING OF HIS CHILDREN

In Genesis 48:1-22, we have recorded the words of blessing Jacob pronounced on his children. Not all the sons were blameless and thus their blessings were muted somewhat. There were two sons who received the most mention:-

1. Reuben, Simeon and Levi were actually rebuked for their sinful ways (Genesis 49:2-7).

2. The others were mentioned briefly.

3. Only two sons were given powerful prophetic words concerning their future:-

a) Judah Genesis 49:8-12
b) Joseph Genesis 49:22-26
i) Ephraim Genesis 48:12-20
ii) Manasseh Genesis 48:12-20

GOD’S CHOICE OF JUDAH

God had His own sovereign reasons why He chose Judah.

“But chose the tribe of Judah,
Mount Zion which He loved.”
Psalm 78:68

1. “But chose the tribe of Judah”

a) No reasons were given.
b) The choice of Judah was an exercise of sovereign will and wisdom.

2. “Mount Zion which He loved”

a) Zion or Jerusalem would be the center of Israel’s worship.
b) No reasons are attached as to why God loved Mount Zion.

JACOB’S PROPHECY ABOUT JUDAH

Jacob’s prophecy included two wonderful Messianic hints:-

1. The scepter shall not depart from Judah (Genesis 49:10a).

2. The word “Shiloh” was a veiled Messianic reference (Genesis 49:10c).
