Day 121 – Psalm 78

“Can He give bread also?” Psalm 78:20d

FOOLISH QUESTIONS

The children of Israel doubted God and severely questioned His power. The following is the full statement they made.

“They said,
‘Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?
Behold, He struck the rock,
So that the waters gushed out,
And the streams overflowed.
Can He give bread also?
Can He provide meat for His people?'”
Psalm 78:19b-20

1. “Behold, He struck the rock, so that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed”

a) This was acknowledged by the children of Israel.
b) However this statement would suggest the following difficulties:
i) They did not seem impressed by this miracle.
ii) They did not seem to appreciate that God had supplied life-giving water.
iii) It seemed as if the miracle of providing water had lost its impact on the people.

2. “Can God provide a table in the wilderness?”

a) The children of Israel expected much more than provision of water.
b) They expected God to provide them a table of food!

3. “Can He give bread also?”

a) Somehow, the children of Israel limited the power of God.
b) He who provided water from a rock, could He not also provide bread?
c) This question of the children of Israel borders on nothing less than foolishness.

4. “Can He provide meat for His people?”

a) There was serious doubt in the hearts and minds of the children of Israel.
b) They could not understand how God could provide meat as well.
c) He who provided water from a rock, could He not provide both bread and meat?
