Day 120 – Psalm 78

“Yes, they spoke against God…” Psalm 78:19a

AUDACITY OF SINFUL ISRAEL

The audacity of Israel knew no bounds. The children of Israel went on to speak against God.

“Yes, they spoke against God:
They said, ‘Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?'”
Psalm 78:19

1. “Yes, they spoke against God”

a) Asaph recorded this rebellion candidly. Indeed, Israel spoke against God.
b) Did Israel know that they were speaking against God?
i) Yes!
ii) Moses warned the children of Israel of this sin more than once.

“He hears your complaints against the LORD.
But what are we, that you complain against us…
For the LORD hears your complaints which you make
against Him. And what are we?
Your complaints are not against us but against the LORD.”
Exodus 16:7b-8

2. They said, “Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?”

a) These words were written by Asaph to summarise the many occasions Israel spoke against God.
b) Essentially this complaining attitude represented the following:
i) Disbelief that God could actually provide for the nation.
ii) Fear that they would all perish in the wilderness.
iii) Dissatisfaction over God’s provision of water and manna.
iv) Rebellion against the leadership of Moses and Aaron.
v) Disrespect for the Lord.
vi) Rejection of the leading of the Lord.
vii) Doubt that they would ever reach the Promised Land.
