SINNING AGAINST THE LORD

What contributed towards the problem of forgetting God? Asaph highlighted the problem of sin in the following text.

“But they sinned even more against Him,
By rebelling against the Most High in the wilderness.”
Psalm 78:17

1. The problem of sin

a) This is an inherent problem.
b) This is also a perennial problem because of the sinful make-up of man.

2. “But they sinned even more against Him”

a) This statement goes beyond the fact that human beings are essentially sinful.
b) “But”
i) This highlights the nature of the sin problem of the children of Israel.
ii) Israel continued to sin despite God’s leading, protection and provision.
iii) There was no let-up in their sinning against God.
c) “Even more against Him”
i) It wasn’t just the normal everyday sin problem.
ii) There was an actual increase of sin against God.
iii) This escalation was uncalled for!

3. “By rebelling against the Most High in the wilderness”

a) The historical situation was clearly declared- it was the period of the wilderness journey.
b) During this period God had specially manifested Himself to Israel.
c) Israel had one of the greatest leaders in Moses.
d) Nevertheless the children of Israel rebelled against God time and again in the wilderness.
e) Their rebelliousness was at an all-time high despite all that God had done for them.
