PROTECTION

There was no mistaking God’s protection of the children of Israel when the nation undertook the journey from Egypt to Canaan. The protection that God gave was nothing short of a miraculous manifestation of God’s power. God shielded Israel day and night!

PROVISION

God also marvelously provided for the children of Israel. The following text describes the extent to which God provided water throughout the wilderness journey.

“He split the rocks in the wilderness,
And gave them drink in abundance like the depths.
He also brought streams out of the rock,
And caused waters to run down like rivers.”
Psalm 78:15-16

1. “And gave them drink in abundance like the depths”

a) Sufficiency of water is of critical importance in any wilderness journey.
b) “Abundance”, this word well describes how God provided.
c) Waters to run down like rivers.

2. Means

a) From the rocks in the wilderness.
b) Streams out of the rock.

A REVIEW OF ISRAEL’S APPROACH TO GOD’S PROVISION OF WATER

Sadly, the children of Israel did not appreciate God’s provision of water very much.

1. They complained in the wilderness of Shur (Exodus 15:24).

2. They complained bitterly at the waters of Marah because the water was bitter (Exodus 15:23-24).

3. They did not express any appreciation when they came to the waters of Elim (Exodus 15:27).

4. They contended with Moses over the matter of provision of water in the Wilderness of Sin (Exodus 17:1-7).

5. They did not learn any spiritual lesson out of these events.

6. God sought to teach them how to diligently obey Him through testing them (Exodus 15:25-26).
