Day 109 – Psalm 78

“That they may set their hope in God…” Psalm 78:7a

NOT JUST KNOWLEDGE

More than knowledge of God is in mind. The goal of the teachers of Israel was to create hope in God. Hope and faith in God go together.

“That they may set their hope in God,
And not forget the works of God,
But keep His commandments.”
Psalm 78:7

1. “That they may set their hope in God”

a) This was the greater goal.
b) Knowledge of God must be faithfully and effectively taught so that it can create hope in God.

2. “And not forget the works of God”

a) God had performed many mighty works for His people.
b) The sad reality was that Israel seemed to have forgotten God “days without number”.
c) The challenge for all teachers was to help Israel not to forget God so easily.
d) There must be diligence exercised if Israel is not to forget God (Deuteronomy 4:9a).
e) Forgetting God would ultimately cause the nation to depart from their teachings and hope (Deuteronomy 4:9b).

3. “But keep His commandments”

a) The keeping of God’s commandments was of utmost importance.
b) This was something that God had emphasized through the teachings of Moses (Deuteronomy 4:40).

THE SIGNIFICANCE

Great significance is to be found in the keeping of the Commandments of God:-

1. Great blessings would be outpoured.

2. It would prevent the nation to turn away from idolatrous practices.

3. It would keep the whole nation faithful and true to their Covenantal God.
