“For He established a testimony in Jacob…” Psalm 78:5a

DIVINE AUTHORITY

Asaph’s commitment to teach the laws of God was backed up by the highest authority. It was God Himself who commanded this.

“For He established a testimony in Jacob,
And appointed a law in Israel,
Which He commanded our fathers,
That they should make them known to their children.”
Psalm 78:5

1. “He established a testimony… and appointed a law”

a) In Jacob… in Israel

“Jacob” is synonymous with “Israel”.

b) He… a definite reference to God Himself.

c) Established… appointed… commanded

i) Established

This is confirmed as a law from God.

ii) Appointed

This speaks of definite reference to this established law.

iii) Commanded

This is no less than a commandment… this is not an option!

2. “That they should make them known to their children”

a) The word “fathers”

i) A reference to biological fathers.

ii) A reference to spiritual fathers.

iii) All must be committed to obeying this law of God.

b) Our children

i) They must be seen as a precious heritage.

ii) They must be taught the laws of God.

iii) Specific reference to this law: Deuteronomy 4:6, 9, 10; 6:6-19
