Day 46 – Psalm 74

“Oh, do not deliver the life of Your turtledove to the wild beast!” Psalm 74:19a

THE TENDER LOVE OF GOD

The psalmist believed with all his heart that God truly loved His people. On numerous occasions God declared His love for His people. Let us look at just two of these beautiful declarations of Divine love.

1. In the days of Moses

“For you are a holy people to the LORD your God;

the LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for Himself,

a special treasure above all the peoples on the face of the earth.”
Deuteronomy 7:6

2. In the days of Isaiah

“Since you were precious in My sight,

you have been honoured,

And I have loved you…”
Isaiah 43:4a

PLEADING THE LOVE AND COMPASSION OF GOD

The psalmist pleaded with God, appealing to His love and compassion.

“Oh, do not deliver the life of Your turtledove to the wild beast!
Do not forget the life of Your poor forever.”
Psalm 74:19

1. “Oh, do not deliver the life of Your turtledove to the wild beast”

a) Turtledove (a harmless and defenseless dove).
b) Judah was described as turtledove.
c) This term was used as an endearing term for a beloved in ancient Israel.
d) This was a plaintive cry for deliverance.
e) The beast in question was the marauding and wicked Babylon.

2. “Do not forget the life of Your poor forever”

a) God was ever concerned about the poor.
b) Special commands were given to help the poor (Deuteronomy 15:7-11).
c) Judah was truly “God’s poor”.
d) Would not God honour His own word about being concerned for the poor?
e) The wicked must not be allowed to prevail and tread down the poor forever.
f) Surely God would arise and deliver His beloved children… His poor children from their dilemma!
