Day 45 – Psalm 74

“Remember this, that the enemy has reproached, O LORD…” Psalm 74:18a

EMPLOYING THE WORD “REMEMBER”

The word “remember” has deep and precious connotations. Hence the psalmist used this word once again.

“Remember this, that the enemy has reproached, O LORD,
And that a foolish people has blasphemed Your name.”
Psalm 74:18

1. “Remember this”

a) It was God Himself who used this word with reference to Israel when it was in Egypt.

“Then the children of Israel groaned because of the bondage,
and they cried out; and their cry came up to God because of the bondage.
So God heard their groaning, and God remembered His covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.
And God looked upon the children of Israel, and God acknowledged them.”
Exodus 2:23-25

b) This was a plaintive cry to God.
i) To hear the groaning of the children of Israel once again.
ii) To acknowledge them.
iii) To act upon the covenant promise given to their forefathers.

2. “That the enemy has reproached, O LORD”

a) The enemy had reproached Israel.
b) It had also reproached the Lord by destroying His temple.

3. “And that a foolish people has blasphemed Your name”

a) The enemy was called “a foolish people” for the following reasons:-
i) They were ignorant about the God of Israel.
ii) They were unmannered and uncouth people (barbaric).
b) Deep concern about the name of God.
i) God’s name was never to be taken in vain.
ii) It was ever meant to be hallowed.
