“The enemy has damaged everything in the sanctuary…” Psalm 74:3b

A CALAMITY

The reason why the psalmist was feeling so uptight is now revealed.

“Lift up Your feet to the perpetual desolations.
The enemy has damaged everything in the sanctuary.”
Psalm 74:3

1. “The sanctuary”

a) The most sacred thing to Israel was God’s sanctuary.
b) The sanctuary was to be held in high regard by everyone.
c) Only priests were allowed in the Holy Place.
d) The High Priest was allowed to enter into the Holy of Holies just once a year.

2. “The enemy has damaged everything in the sanctuary”

a) What had the enemy of Israel done?
b) He had defeated Israel in battle.
c) Worse he had damaged everything in the sanctuary.
d) This was nothing short of sacrilege!

3. “Perpetual desolations”

a) How had the enemy left Israel?
b) The enemy had virtually destroyed the land.
c) The land of Israel may be described as “perpetual desolations”.

4. “Lift up Your feet”

a) This was a plea to God to personally examine the ruined land of Israel.
b) Had God personally seen the desolation that the enemy had inflicted on Israel?
c) There was a strong plea to God to be deeply and directly involved in the afflictions of the nation.
d) This plea was uttered with a deep sense of grief and pain.
