“Now also when I am old and grayheaded…” Psalm 71:18a

FROM YOUTH TO OLD AGE

All too quickly time speeds by. The author now speaks of being grayheaded.

“Now also when I am old and grayheaded,
O God, do not forsake me,
Until I declare Your strength to this generation,
Your power to everyone who is to come.”
Psalm 71:18

1. Old and grayheaded

a) This is not a description of a person who feels old.
b) The author was indeed older now and he had grey hairs to prove it.

2. Facing fears that sometimes comes with old age

a) Fear of being forsaken (by family).
b) Fear of being forsaken by God.
i) This may only be a feeling.
ii) Wisely this feeling is brought to God in prayer.
iii) Every negatively inclined feeling can be overcome!
c) There is implied assurance that God would never forsake His own (Psalm 27:10).

3. A prayerful commitment

a) To speak about the Lord.
b) To teach the next generation.

4. Precious lessons that need to be passed down

a) The Lord’s strength.
b) The Lord’s power.
c) These are lessons that have been learned personally by the author.
