Day 309 – Psalm 69

“Let their table become a snare before them…” Psalm 69:22a

A COMPLEX COMPOSITION

Psalm 69 is complex in its composition. There are at least three major things to be noted:-

1. A Personal element with special relevance to David the psalmist.

2. Messianic reference (especially with reference to the suffering of Christ).

3. An imprecatory element that helps us to understand the depth of anguish of the writer.

AN IMPRECATORY PRAYER I

It is worthwhile to study the imprecatory statements carefully.

“Let their table become a snare before them,
And their well-being a trap.
Let their eyes be darkened, so that they do not see;
And make their loins shake continually.
Pour out Your indignation upon them,
And let Your wrathful anger take hold of them.”
Psalm 69:22-24

1. “Their table become a snare”

a) In the ancient days a very low table would be used for dining purposes.
b) A table cloth would cover the low table and diners would sit on the floor to partake of food. It is possible for the table cloth to cause the careless diner to fall down.
c) No safety or protection is to be accorded the wicked- not even at home.

2. “Their eyes be darkened… their loins shake continually”

a) Spiritual sight is in mind here.
b) This is a reference to being fearful.

3. God’s indignant anger outpoured

This is firstly a reference to the justice of God and its awesome expression.
