Day 296 – Psalm 68

“They have seen Your procession, O God…” Psalm 68:24a

THE TRIUMPHAL PROCESSION

David went on to describe the grand triumphal procession of the Lord as the victorious King of kings.

“They have seen Your procession, O God,
The procession of my God, my King, into the sanctuary.
The singers went before, the players on instruments followed after;
Among them were the maidens playing timbrels.”
Psalm 68:24-25

1. What was this procession?

In the context of Psalm 68, this procession was none other than the day David successfully brought the Ark of the Lord into Jerusalem (2 Samuel 6). The Ark of the Lord represented the Presence of God.

2. Description of the procession

This was described in the grandest of language. David deeply personalised this text when he used the personal pronoun “my”.

a) The procession of God
i) He was the God of Israel.
ii) He was David’s God.
b) The procession of the King
i) He was the rightful King of Israel.
ii) David was king only in the sense of ruling the nation on behalf of the King of kings.
iii) The Lord was David’s personal king.

3. A festive religious spirit was present

a) There were singers (choirs).
b) There were instrumentalists.
c) There were maidens playing timbrels.

All were expressing great joy at this great triumphal procession of the Lord.
