WHAT IS PRAYER?

Prayer may be described in many ways. The following are some of the ways prayer may be understood and appreciated.

1. It is a privilege given to man to commune with God.

2. He may use this privilege to present his petitions to the Lord.

3. He may also employ this privilege to extol God for His greatness.

4. The petitioner may expect that his prayers would not be in vain.

5. He may look forward to God hearing and answering his prayers.

INSIGHTS OF PRAYER

Many precious insights of prayer may be found in the Book of Psalms. The following text offers a very important insight.

“If I regard iniquity in my heart,
The LORD will not hear.”
Psalm 66:18

1. “If I regard iniquity in my heart”

a) This could be a reference to not confessing our sins (Psalm 32:3).
b) This could also be a reference to refusal to admit wrong (Jeremiah 2:35).
c) The problem of sin (iniquity) had not been dealt with.
i) No confession
ii) No forgiveness

2. “The LORD will not hear”

a) The first thing that God wants us to deal with is the problem of our iniquity.
b) He does not delight in hearing endless “confession”.
c) But He does want us to be honest with him where there is sin in our heart.
d) But if there is no confession, then He reserves the right not to hear us.
