Day 225 – Psalm 61

“You will prolong the king’s life…” Psalm 61:6a

A LONG LIFE

Just about everyone desires a long life. It is most natural to want to live as long as possible, especially if that life is meaningful and fulfilling.

1. The average life span

This is between 70-80 years (Psalm 90:10). These figures were given by Moses. However, our normal life span must not be taken for granted. We have to do our part in maintaining our health.

2. Dangers that threaten our life

There are many dangers that can cut short our expected life-span on earth.

a) War
b) Disease
c) Severe sin-problems

PRAYING FOR A LONG LIFE

May we pray for a long life? The short answer is “Yes!” This prayer request was made by David in the following text.

“He asked life from You, and You gave it to him-
Length of days forever and ever.”
Psalm 21:4

We have another reference to God’s blessing of a long life in this text.

“You will prolong the king’s life,
His years as many generations.”
Psalm 61:6

1. “You will prolong the king’s life”

a) This was already evident in David’s experience.
b) He had escaped near-death on many occasions!
c) There was happy confidence in the Lord that his life would be prolonged.

2. “His years as many generations”

a) This is an intended hyperbole; he will live out a full life.
b) It simply means that David’s life would not be cut short abruptly.
