Day 157 – Psalm 55

“Oh, that I had wings like a dove…” Psalm 55:6a

FIGHT OR FLIGHT

David was caught in a terrible emotional maelstrom. The warrior part of David wanted to fight. But the very human part of David suggested flight instead. He struggled hard with feelings of flight.

“So I said, ‘Oh, that I had wings like a dove!
I would fly away and be at rest.
Indeed, I would wander far off,
And remain in the wilderness,
I would hasten my escape
From the windy storm and tempest.'”
Psalm 55:6-8

1. To be human is not sinful

a) David was fragile emotionally and spiritually at this point in his life.
b) He longed to be far away from the conflict that he was engaged in.

2. Human desire to escape confrontational situations

a) David thought of “flying away” like a dove and find rest.
i) But he was not a dove.
ii) He could not just fly away.
b) He wanted just to wander away and remain in the wilderness as he once was.
i) There was a time when this could be done.
ii) But the situations in life had changed for David.
iii) He could not just wander off and remain in the wilderness.
c) He just wanted to escape from “the windy storm and tempest”.
i) There are good times of life.
ii) But there are also times when life may produce storms.
iii) There is no escaping these storms… except in death!
