Day 155 – Psalm 55
“Because of the voice of the enemy…” Psalm 55:3a
CONTEMPLATION AND PRAYER
David fought to overcome this spirit of restlessness. Contemplation and prayer were his chosen means to overcome the sense of anxiety that was obviously building up within him.
“Because of the voice of the enemy,
Because of the oppression of the wicked;
For they would bring down trouble upon me;
And in wrath they hate me.”
Psalm 55:3
1. “Because”
a) David managed to identify the cause of the distress he felt.
b) These needed to be expressed in some detail.
2. Four problems highlighted:-
a) “Because of the voice of the enemy”
i) An enemy had been identified.
ii) This was a very vocal enemy and his voice caused anxiety.
b) “Because of the oppression of the wicked”
i) These enemies oppressed David.
ii) Their wickedness was disturbing.
c) “For they bring trouble upon me”
i) This was anticipated.
ii) This was also very real.
d) “And in wrath they hate me”
David felt both their wrath and their hatred. These created a terrible sense of restlessness in his soul.
